FC Utrecht is a Dutch professional football club based in the city of Utrecht. The club was founded in 1970 and currently plays in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football. FC Utrecht has won the KNVB Cup twice, in 1985 and 2003, and the Johan Cruyff Shield once, in 2004.
Club History
FC Utrecht was founded on July 1, 1970, as a merger of three local clubs: DOS, Elinkwijk, and Velox. The new club took the name "FC Utrecht" and adopted the red and white colors of DOS. FC Utrecht played its first match on August 16, 1970, against Go Ahead Eagles and won 3-1.
FC Utrecht has played in the Eredivisie for most of its history. The club's best league finish was second place in 1981 and 2006. FC Utrecht has also won the KNVB Cup twice, in 1985 and 2003, and the Johan Cruyff Shield once, in 2004.
